Key iOS Chip Architect Gerard Williams III Departs Apple

Gerard Williams III, lead designer of Apple's custom iOS chips from A7 to A12X, has departed the company, according to CNET. While no indication of a change has been made on his LinkedIn profile, it does offer a glimpse into his design prowess.

Williams' presence goes back even further into Apple device history, as he served as the technical lead for the Cortex-A8 design, ARM's first superscalar core design and the heart of the iPhone 3GS. His role evidently grew over the years, with CPU architecture responsibilities eventually evolving into ownership of the entire system on chip (SoC), which houses CPU, graphics, image processing, secure enclave, motion, and AI cores.

A look at his patent portfolio shows he was a key force behind Apple's foray into mixed CPU core clusters starting with the A10 Fusion chip, and transitioning into full heterogeneous cores with the A11 Bionic. His body of work also includes an emphasis on cache, memory, and energy efficiency. These have become key differentiating features as seen in performance benchmarking from sites such as AnandTech.

He came to Apple with a splash, as the A7 was Apple's first 64-bit CPU core. This design arrived on the market over a full year before competitors like Qualcomm and Samsung could respond and largely cemented the technical prowess of the SoC team Apple had created.

If confirmed, his departure would follow the more well-known CPU architect Jim Keller, who was part of Apple's acquisition of PA Semi. More recently, Apple's SoC team lost its lead Manu Gulati, whose vacated role was assumed by Williams. Apple has had some success at retaining key technical executives, however, as the recent rumors of SVP of Hardware Technologies Johnny Srouji's candidacy for Intel CEO fizzled out. Apple also managed to keep Bob Mansfield despite having announced his retirement.

As for potential destinations, Intel has become the number one destination for high-profile technical leads, as they have lured many key AMD executives, as well as former Apple lead Jim Keller. Intel has been absorbing members of the press as well as it seeks to reclaim its technical leadership in the industry, taking on long-tenured PC Perspectivewriters, including editor-in-chief Ryan Shrout. Also Read:jihosoft Free iPhone Data Recovery

Apple AirPower Wireless Charging Mat Cancelled

Apple announced the AirPower wireless charging mat back in 2017. Since then, there have been rumors upon rumors about an impending launch at any given time.

Apple’s original launch window was before the end of 2017. However, it soon broke down and, throughout 2018, there was semi-consistent speculation that Apple was “just around the corner” to actually launching it. But, it looks like we won’t be seeing AirPower anytime soon. Or ever, for that matter.

TechCrunch has the bad news today. As many had expected to see AirPower launch today, we’ve actually been dealt the opposite news: AirPower is cancelled. Here is Apple’s Dan Riccio on the cancellation, which Apple is apologizing for:

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,” said Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in an emailed statement today.”

It’s worth noting that the construction of the AirPower was at odds with the industry standard up to this point. The AirPower consisted of three layers of coils, which no other company had attempted to utilize. And now we know that the AirPower was unable to “achieve” the “high standards” set in place by Apple for its products.

Apple does note that it’s not giving up on wireless experiences, and it’s possible that it will try again with a different wireless charging mat. One with a different design than the AirPower. But, as it stands right now, the AirPower wireless charging mat is officially cancelled and we can go ahead and stop looking forward to it.
Our Take

The idea of AirPower was a good one, but this almost always felt a little inevitable. Considering how many times the company scrubbed AirPower from its website, or stayed quiet on the accessory, it’s never really felt like a device that was actually going to launch. It looks like owners of the second-generation AirPods with a wireless charging casewill need to get a different wireless charging mat.
We Want To Hear From You

Are you sad about this news at all? Frustrated? Or had you already written off AirPower?

Apple releases iOS 12.2 Public Beta 5

Apple releases iOS 12.2 Public Beta 5

Apple has seeded the fifth beta of iOS 12.2 with minor changes. Here’s how you can get this update on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
WHAT’S NEW IN IOS 12.2 BETA 5?

iOS 12.2 Beta 5 weighs about 300MB for all compatible devices and comes with a build number of 16E5223a.

Since this build number ends with an “a”, it’s highly likely that the upcoming beta will be Golden Master.

As far as changes go, this update doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Just like its predecessor, Beta 5 brings bug fixes and performance enhancements.

As the fifth beta is available for both developers and non-developers, you can get this update straight from the Settings app.

Alternatively, you can manually download and install the OTA profile given below.

SHOULD YOU UPDATE?

This update is a regular “bug-fix” update that corrects the issues present in the older betas. If your device is already stable and bug-free, there’s no good reason for you to update it.

If, however, you are into jailbreaking and have already updated to iOS 12, avoid this version like the plague. Also Read:How to Make Funny Memes on iPhone & Best Meme Maker Apps in 2019

Repair To Fix AirPods Not Connecting to Mac

Repair To Fix AirPods Not Connecting to Mac

When you do this, make sure your AirPods are charged up and the AirPods case is open (or that AirPods are in your ears). After a while, your AirPods should connect to the Mac and you’ll see their battery percentage there. If you want to disconnect, just click on the Disconnect button.
Repair To Fix AirPods Not Connecting to Mac

If your AirPods are already paired with your Mac but they refuse to connect, you’ll have to unpair and pair them again. As AirPods work as Bluetooth headphones, this is the same as resetting them.

Step 1: Open the System Preferences app and go to Bluetooth.

Step 2: You’ll see your AirPods in the list if they’re already paired once. Right-click and choose Remove. On the next pop up, click on Forget Device.

Step 3: Your AirPods are now disconnected and reset. Open the AirPods case next to the Mac and press and hold the Round setup button at the back of the case. You’ll see AirPods in the list of available devices. Click on the Connect button to start the pairing process.

In a couple of seconds, they’ll be connected and you’ll see them in the Bluetooth section in the menu bar as well.
Manually Reset AirPods

As we’ve highlighted in our AirPods tips and tricks guide, you can manually reset your AirPods without involving the Mac. Just press and hold the Round button at the back of the case for 10 seconds or until you see the white flashing light inside the case. Now when you go to connect it to the Mac, you’ll have to go through the pairing process again. Once you’re done, the issue of AirPods not connecting to Mac should be fixed.
Solve The Connection Issues with AirBuddy

Constantly manually connecting to AirPods on the Mac is very frustrating. Especially when you have to go to the Bluetooth menu to connect to AirPods.

AirBuddy is a small $5 utility that solves this problem. It brings iOS style connection popup to the Mac. Just flick open the AirPods next to your Mac and a panel will drop down listing your AirPods and their battery percentage. Just click on Click to Connect button and your AirPods will be connected.

The best thing about AirBuddy is that it works consistently, every time. This is the feature Apple should have included in macOS.

Other Tips

If AirPods are connected but there’s no sound coming from them, you should check to see if they’re selected as output or not. You can do this by clicking the Volume icon in the menu bar and then selecting your AirPods. Alternatively, you can go to the Sound section in System Preferences and select your AirPods as an output.

If you’ve done all of the above and AirPods are still not connecting, try to connect them to your iPhone or iPad and see if they’re working there. If it’s not the AirPods, it might be your Mac’s problem.

In that case, first, try rebooting your Mac. Power it down and boot it again after leaving it powered off for a minute. Also Read:jihosoft Free iPhone Data Recovery

Save WhatsApp Data via Email

One of the ways you can back up your WhatsApp chats on your iPhone is by simply sending the chats to yourself via email. WhatsApp allows you to export chats to email although they will not include media files.

If you want to save the conversation you can email yourself the chat history using this procedure.

Access the conversation on WhatsApp that you want to email yourself.

In the navigation bar tap on the name or contact number of the person.

Scroll to the bottom of the chat and select the option of export chat.

You will get the option of whether you want to attach media or want the email without media.

You can select the mail app from the given options according to the account you are using on your Apple device.

Enter the email address and tap on send.

Within few seconds you will receive the notification.

Bottom Line: Comparing the 4 Methods

The methods we have outlined above all have their pros and cons. But to get a real sense of which one will work best for you, it is necessary to compare them against each other;

iTransor is a paid method but you will not have to uninstall WhatsApp to restore the backup since the backup is stored on your computer.

iCloud is free to use although you will have to uninstall WhatsApp when restoring the backup. You will also require to pay storage space in iCloud if you have a large WhatsApp backup.

The third method is also free but you will not be able to restore WhatsApp messages only. All the data on the device may also be erased during the restore process.

The last method is free but it saves only some conversations instead of the whole WhatsApp database.

Import Google Contacts to iPhone 2019

1. Import Google Contacts to iPhone by Syncing

Before you do anything, you'll need to have set up a Google account on your iPhone. To do that, you'll need to follow the steps below:

Go into Settings > Accounts & Passwords (or go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars if you use iOS 10.3.3 and earlier versions) and then hit Add Account.

Following that, just press the Google logo to begin the process.

Enter your Gmail credentials and hit Sign in. You'll then be asked what you want iOS to access in your Google account; as long as Contacts is selected, it doesn't really matter.

By now, you should have your Gmail set up on your iPhone. Here's how to sync the Google contacts with your iPhone.

Again, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords (or Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars) on your iPhone, and then hit the Gmail account that you just added.

You'll see a little toggle button next to Contacts – make sure that is turned on (in green).

Your contacts will then start streaming in from Gmail to your Contacts section on your iPhone.

2. Import Google Contacts to iPhone via iCloud

An alternative method is to utilize iCloud to retrieve your Google contacts to your iPhone. By deploying this strategy, you'll be able to select which contacts you import, rather than having them all flood across. It's really easy, just follow these steps:

First off, make sure you're using the old version of Google Contacts, because the newest update doesn't support the exporting function.

Log into your Gmail account on your browser, then hit Google > Contacts.

Choose the contacts that you want to import, press More > Export > vCard format.

You'll then need to go across to your iCloud and log into your account using your Apple credentials on iCloud.com.

Click on Contacts and select Import vCard (the file you've just exported from Google).

Then turn on Contacts in iCloud on your iPhone by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.

Then you can find the Google contact has been imported to your iPhone.
